Larry Ellison, the Oracle billionaire who turned Indian Wells into a world class tennis destination, apparently likes pickleball. As of last year Indian Wells is arguably the greatest pickleball complex in the world.
If you haven’t been: Go.
The BNP Paribas Tennis Tournament is held every March. The second annual Margaritaville USA Pickleball National Championship (love that name) will be held November 2-10. The inaugural tournament attracted over 2,000 players and organizers expect more this year. Plus, unlike the tennis tourney, the pickleball fest is open to anyone from skills levels 3.0 and up. You get to play instead of watch!
We’ve been traveling to the Palm Springs area every winter for the last few years. Think beautiful mountains and desert, fun loving people, fine dining and, if you know where to look, lots of pickleball and tennis. But unless you own a home, the question is always, where to stay?
If you’re tired of hotels and overpriced resorts, we recommend you check out Sky Valley Resort. Located just 25 minutes from Indian Wells, Sky Valley is a collection of tiny homes, RV Rental spaces, natural mineral hot pools and, did we mention eight new pickleball courts with permanent nets? (Plus two tennis courts.) Warm up for the tourney, go play, and then, win or lose, relax in the fantastic mineral-fed pools, with your favorite beverage nearby.
Sky Valley offers a congenial community atmosphere with lots of other activities and events (live music and art classes for example) and an on-site restaurant if your husband doesn’t want to play.
If you want a snack on the way to the tournament, there is a grocery store just before the corner of Washington Street and Varner Road with a couple different options for gas down the road a little further.
For RVers, prices range from $40 to $64 per day. Weekly and monthly rates are the best. Fully furnished tiny homes rates vary depending on the time of year. Special deals are often offered in the fall, spring and summer — call to find out if you can get one.
Everyone has access to the courts and pools. After the huge home bubble of the last few decades tiny homes offer a refreshing niche: a comfortable place to relax and enjoy an active lifestyle without extra home maintenance.
While you are in town for the tournament, why not stay a couple of extra days and experience what the Coachella Valley has to offer? Hike in Joshua Tree National Park, catch the Palm Springs Tramway or just enjoy the quiet nights and beautiful stars. For updated pricing and availability check out: Sky Valley Resorts Reservations or call them at (760) 507-2303.
