Aerow Sports, primarily a golfing company, had never heard of pickleball, but had noticed that they were selling out of their right handed golfing gloves. . With a little research, they found that people were purchasing their glove for a new sport called pickleball. In fact, pickleball was the fastest growing sport in America. It had become popular so quickly, the entire sport equipment industry was caught off guard.

Pickleball Glove Development

Aerow Recon pickleball gloves are a top quality, specifically-designed glove. Pickleball, being such a new sport, presented unique challenges for Aerow; how do you develop a great glove for a sport that has very little technical data? The answer was simple, Aerow did their own “recon” and learned to play the game, developing their pickleball Glove through spirited competition. What they found is that a great pickleball glove needed grip, moisture wicking, durability, comfort, feel and support.

The next step was rapid prototyping and testing in tournaments and competitions, which brought us to the final design for the Aerow Recon pickleball glove, which is a fingerless, pre-curved, perforated cabretta leather glove. So even though pickleball is a new sport, the Aerow Recon Gloves were developed through competitions and experience, not just repurposed from another sport. The Aerow pickleball gloves are specifically designed and tested to help you play your best pickleball match.

Two things I never thought I’d wear: a leather mini-skirt* and the Recon pickleball gloves available from Aerow Sports.

Unlike the mini-skirt, the Recon glove was a pleasant surprise the first time I tried it and one I plan to make a permanent part of my pickleball attire. There are two obvious benefits that make this purchase worth the price. In hot weather the glove keeps my paddle from twisting due to sweat. In cold weather it retains enough warmth to keep my hand from getting cold and then stiff.

Don’t dig out your ski gloves or summer gardening gloves. The Recon is made of premium cabretta leather that absorbs sweat to prevent grip slip. The perforated leather palm and mesh upper means good breathability and flexibility. The ergonomic design and excellent fit helps with both control and placement. The only fear I had in trying a glove was that I might lose my “feel” for the ball. However, this glove is so well designed the opposite was true. It felt like part of my hand and gave me a better “feel” because it kept my hand from moving when I didn’t want it to. Another reason to check out the Recon is that I’m convinced the added support helps reduce tendon strain and possible injury. 

The Recon pickleball glove is fingerless. I don’t know if Aerow plans to introduce a fingered glove in the future but I would like to try one if they do. The fingerless design has a more natural feel and allows for a tighter grip, but our chilly Northwest November weather (we played in 40 degree weather yesterday) makes you want to cover up everything you can with the proper attire until your blood gets moving.

*Full disclosure: A few years ago I showed up at a Halloween party without a costume, so my partner Lisa and her sister decided they’d outfit me with a wig, stuffed bra, a fabulous gold blouse and the black mini-skirt. I learned it’s important to cross your legs when sitting, and I gained new respect for the me-too movement when a drunken sailor tried to kiss me. If I had my Recon glove I would have punched him.
